Could there be a problem with medication reaching the baby’s eyes?
A research done oneye deposition recently demonstrated that using the hood for aerosol therapy results in minimal deposition at the infant’s eye area, which was no greater than when using a conventional face mask.(Amirav et al, JAerosol Med 2008, http://bbreath.com/clinical/eyes_effect.pdf).
Is it more difficult to treat babies older than 1½ years?
While it is easier to deliver the drug to a younger baby, our experience shows that children up to 2 years old can be treated effectively with the hood. An advantage of the hood solution compared to the face mask is that there is no need for a tight seal for the treatment to be effective, hence cooperation by the baby is not as important. In addition, while the older baby is asleep there is usually no interference with the treatment. Even when the older baby is awake, the presence of the caregiver can usually calm the baby and help in keeping the hood in place, while the funnel can be easily adjusted to direct the drug to the baby’s nose. The research done on the hood solution shows unequivocally that it is at least as effective as the facemask in treatment of babies. http://bbreath.com/clinical/hood_vs_mask.pdf
Could the medication leak from the topand bottom of the device?
The openings on the top and bottom ofthe device are meant to allow the CO2 to go out. The nebulizer is directed tothe baby’s nose and mouth and so the medication reaches the baby directly. The research done on the hood solution shows unequivocally that it is at least as effective as the facemask in treatment of babies. http://bbreath.com/clinical/hood_vs_mask.pdf
